Maintaining a healthy lifestyle after bariatric surgery has taught me valuable habits that any 40-year-old woman can benefit from. As women enter their 40s, establishing and maintaining healthy habits becomes crucial for overall well-being. This decade often brings unique challenges, including hormonal changes, increased responsibilities, and the need for self-care. Here are my go-to wellness tips:
1 - Prioritize Protein
Protein keeps you full, helps maintain muscle, and supports overall health. I aim for lean meats, eggs, Greek yogurt, and plant-based proteins daily.
2 - Separate Drinking & Eating
Drinking liquids while eating can lead to overeating and poor digestion. I wait at least 30 minutes before and after meals to drink fluids. I also refrain from drinking while eating.

3 - Get Enough Sleep
Quality sleep is crucial for metabolism, recovery, and overall well-being. I aim for 7-9 hours of restful sleep each night.
4 - Take the Right Vitamins
A balanced diet isn't always enough. I take bariatric-formulated vitamins, but every woman over 40 should focus on essentials like vitamin D, calcium, and B12. Some women may even need to focus on additional supplements like iron. Consult with your physician or dietitian.
5 - Be Mindful of Alcohol Intake
Alcohol affects the body differently after weight loss surgery, but even without surgery, it can impact metabolism, sleep and overall health. I even try to limit mocktails as they tend to be high in sugar.
6 - Stay Active
Movement is key, even with joint limitations. Due to my knee and lower-back issues, I focus on low-impact workouts like various versions of water fitness to stay strong and mobile.

7 - Increase Fiber Intake
Fiber supports digestion and heart health. I incorporate veggies, berries, and whole grains while balancing them with my protein needs. I do have to include Benefiber in my daily routine.
8 - Hydrate & Control Portions
I drink plenty of water daily and practice mindful eating with smaller portions to avoid overeating.
I'm not a medical professional but these habits help me feel my best, and I'm sure they can work for you too!
